D90!

After almost a year of saving, then losing all my savings and having to save up all over again, I finally bought a Nikon D90 at the beginning of the month. I'd been planning to upgrade my D40 for a while because I wanted something more than an entry level SLR, and the D90 just ticked all the boxes for me.

I've been trying to get out as much as I can to take photos, but what with real life and rubbish weather getting in the way, I haven't always had the time.

However, I figured I'd share a few photos I've taken with it so far.

I'm very happy. Can't wait to get out more with it.

Catch Up

Here are some photos from my glorious summer holiday. It feels like I came back ages ago which is rather depressing.

Oh, and I've finally upgraded to a Nikon D90. I'm still getting to grips with it but hopefully I'll have some exciting things to post soon.

Apologies

I haven't posted since the 18th May?! What's that all about?!

Okay, so my two utterly boring and terrible reasons for being so delayed with the blogging:

1) Real life. I started a new job in May and am now working there full time. This means minimal time for photo taking and brainstorming (although the camera fund is looking good for the first time in about a year).

2) When I am at home I can't think of anything to take a photo of, so as a result I haven't really taken a photo I care about for months. However, I took some photos I absolutely adore while on holiday and am determined to make more of an effort with photography again once my schedule clears up.

Rome

St Peter's Square. Vatican City.
Diana Mini. Lomography CN100 film

At the end of last month I was rather unexpectedly whisked away to Rome by my wonderful boyfriend. Rome has been on my list of places to visit for as long as I can remember so you can imagine how excited I was to get the opportunity to go.

I think the thing that amazed me most about the city is that around every corner and at the end of every backstreet there is some amazing building that you just stand in awe of.

Piazza Navona

I can't even begin to describe just how much fun I had or show you everything we saw. I could try, but it wouldn't do it justice.

Spanish Steps

I'll just show you photos instead.

Castel Sant'Angelo

The Trevi fountain was my favourite though. I could have quite easily stayed here all day.
We threw some coins into the fountain and if the legend is to be believed this means we'll definitely go back to Rome.

May

I'm rather behind with photo uploading lately, so rather than bore you with a billion unnecessary posts I thought I'd just post all my photos in here. I've got a separate post full of Rome photos coming up too :)

This is what I've been up to over the past couple of weeks.

On the 3rd May I saw my beloved Blood Red Shoes in London.
It was my 25th time seeing them live and they still manage to amaze me.

I haven't really been able to explore much due to the fact it WON'T STOP RAINING and I had tonsillitis last week. However, I did go on one pretty nice walk.

Making the most of the blue skies while they last.

Next week I'll be seeing Say Anything twice (!!) I can't wait, I'm far too excited right now. Expect a great deal of photos from that :)

Holga 135

The Holga is pretty much responsible for my love of Lomography. My sister got a Holga 120 CFN a few years ago (which I stole so I could try it out) and not only does it look incredible, but the results can be awesome.

Taken with a Holga 120 CFN in 2009.

The Holga 135 uses 35mm film rather than 120mm film. This makes it the tiniest bit easier to get the films developed when you’re done. I got mine while holidaying in the States in October ’11. I chose the red one because, duh, who doesn’t want a bright red camera?

My first roll with this camera was a double challenge because I was a) using a camera I’d never used before and b) using black and white film for the first time.

Black and white was weird for me because although I do a lot of black and white conversion in my digital work, primarily my main reason for taking a photo of something is because of the colours. With black and white you have to think about how the photo is going to look once the print is in your hands as obviously a picture that looks amazing in colour will look pretty terrible in black and white.

Film: Kodak Professional BW400 Black and White film

I wasn’t entirely happy with the first roll for many reasons. Mainly because everything looked so boring and bland, also because I was having difficulty getting used to the lens. I did, however, discover that the focus ring actually works on this camera (on my Diana Mini turning the focus ring makes next to no difference).

Nevertheless, over the past couple of weeks I've been trying again, but this time using a colour film. These turned out slightly better. I think this camera is going to be a learning curve. Sometimes it’s amazing and other times it feels deliberately frustrating. That being said I still got all of these beauties:

I really love double exposures.

Film: Fuji Superia 400

Overall I'm a lot happier with this film than I was with the first one. I shall have to persevere. I'm sure it'll all be worth it :)
